Preparations for Schindler
|
Altogether 43 educators from around the MonDak region participated in a workshop sponsoredby the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and hosted by the MonDak Heritage Center on June 12-13, 2006. The extensive two-day workshop on "Teaching the Holocaust" was conducted by Sheila Hansen, regional educator for the Holocaust Museum. Carol Hearron, an English teacher from Sidney High School, taught one of the sessions on literature of the Holocaust. This in-depth workshop was designed to give history and background on the Holocaust, to supplement lesson ideas, and to provide resources for educators teaching Holocaust units in their classrooms. Most of the teachers attending the workshop brought students to the Schindler Exhibition at the MonDak Heritage Center in Fall 2006. A number of staff and volunteers the Center also participated in the workshop and were on hand throughout the exhibition to answer questions and provide resources to interested teachers and parents. Museum officials would like to thank the businesses who helped support this workshop with their contributions of equipment and supplies: Blue Rock Bottling Co. for water, County Market for snacks, Lower Yellowstone REA for tables, Richland County for projector equipment and the Sidney Assembly of God Church for comfortable folding chairs. Sandy Turner, Center Coordinator, said, “What I knew about the Holocaust before I took the workshop was minimal. I hope with all the supporting exhibits the volunteers and staff have been preparing to go with the Schindler Exhibition, everyone will have a better understanding of the Holocaust and stand against this happening again.” Other educators or interested persons from around the region or neighboring states who were unable to attend the workshop but would like information on the resources for the Holocaust and/or the Schindler Exhibition should contact the MonDak Heritage Center at 406-433-3500 or mdhc@richland.org for more information. |
